Remembering Jim Tompkins

Jim Tompkins passed away on September 3, 2025. For many years, Jim and his wife Patty have been pillars of the Rochester Canoe Club community. Jim served in nearly every volunteer role at RCC, contributing countless hours to keep the club thriving. Most recently, he served as our Principal Race Officer, becoming well-known for expertly starting countless races on the bay.

Jim welcomed everyone—new members and old friends alike—with his characteristic smile and genuine warmth. He loved every aspect of life at RCC: racing as a sailor, maintaining the clubhouse, supporting Roc City Sailing, sharing meals with family and friends, and orchestrating races from the committee boat. His presence made RCC a better place, and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.

In honor of Jim’s memory, the family has requested that donations be made to ROC City Sailing, a program that was close to Jim’s heart. If you would like to make a contribution in Jim’s name, please use the link below, where you can also share special memories and messages for the family.

Messages from our sailing community

May Jim rest and sail in peace. Thanking him for his legacy that enabled me to begin sailing.

Michele

Jim and Patty were some of the first members to welcome us to the club. They immediately made us feel like we belonged and Jim really encouraged our eldest daughter in her sailing lessons. He gave her jobs and asked how she was doing. We are so glad we got the chance to meet Jim. His love of his family and sailing is very apparent and his kindness and generosity will not be forgotten.

Like so many others, I was warmly welcomed to RCC by Jim. Every conversation was easy and interesting. He had a real knack for making people feel seen and appreciated. He also introduced me to the nuances of setting marks. His passing is a great loss to his family and the club.

We were lucky to meet Jim through swimming! Listening to him cheer always made us smile! His booming voice echoing off the rafters, into the ears of those who needed an extra boost. It is evident in all he did how much he cared about the people in his community and family!

I have fond memories of many afternoons iceboating and skating out of the Tompkins’ yard while I was growing up. His natural excitement was infectious and as a kid I really enjoyed having a friend 50 years my senior.

RCC is a wonderful place and Jim has been a huge reason in so many ways. We’ll miss you terribly.

Our condolences to Pat and her family. I just recently learned of Jim’s passing. Jim was one of the nicest persons I’ve ever known. Always welcoming with genuine warmth and smile. He will be missed.
