Whether you’ve always wanted to learn to sail or you’re ready to sharpen your skills, Roc City Sailing offers hands-on, accessible lessons for adults on Irondequoit Bay. Our programs are designed to help you feel confident at the helm, understand the wind and water, and enjoy time on the bay safely.
All classes are led by US Sailing–certified instructors who emphasize safety, inclusion, and fun. You’ll learn both on shore and on the water, with plenty of hands-on practice. Life jackets and boats are provided; you just bring enthusiasm, water shoes, and a willingness to get a little wet.
Adult Beginner
Perfect for anyone new to sailing or returning after a long break. You’ll learn the fundamentals of boat handling, steering, sail control, tacking, gybing, and safety procedures. Classes are taught on stable, responsive boats like the Sunfish and JY15.
Adult Intermediate (Youth/Adult Intermediate)
For sailors who already know the basics and want to take the next step. You’ll build solo sailing confidence, practice maneuvering in different wind conditions, and explore more advanced topics like sail trim, balance, and weather awareness.
Bridge to Racing (Youth/Adult Bridge to Racing)
This course introduces the excitement of sailboat racing in a relaxed, supportive setting. You’ll learn the essentials of race rules, strategy and boat speed, then put your skills to the test in short practice races on Irondequoit Bay.
Race Clinic (Youth/Adult Race Clinic)
Designed for sailors eager to push their performance further. Learn how to start fast, round marks efficiently, and fine-tune your sail trim for speed. We’ll cover race tactics and decision-making, with on-the-water coaching to help you level up your racing skills.
Practice Sail (Youth/Adult)
Once you’ve learned the basics of controlling a sailboat, the thing that helps you progress most quickly is simply time on the water. Practice Sails give you that: relaxed, loosely structured sailing time to build comfort, try different conditions, and work on your maneuvers and confidence.
Instructors are on hand to offer coaching and tips based on where you are in your learning, and safety boats are always nearby to help. It’s low-pressure time to get more familiar with the boat, gain confidence, and log the hours that turn new skills into second nature.
